Australian Wines

Australian wine pioneers became involved in viticulture around 1840 with Italians in Riverina, Swiss in Victoria, Dalmatians in Western Australia and Lutheran Germans in South Australia, particularly the Barossa and Clare Valleys. South Australia is the most important wine producing state and is consistently responsible for almost 50% of Australia’s wine production. Many areas in Australia have been phylloxera free and have very old, ungrafted vines.
