Rye Whiskey

For large producers Rye whiskey, the proportions are typically about 51% rye, 39% corn, and 10% malted barley. Rye grain is known for imparting what many call a spicy, robust characte or fruity flavor to the whiskey. The use of new charred-oak barrels imparts more of its own flavors of oak, caramel, and vanilla into the whiskey.
Rye whiskey largely disappeared after Prohibition and only a few brands, survived it such as Old Overholt, the Sazerac company with Colonel E. H. Taylor, Sazerac Rye, Thomas H. Handy, and various smaller companies.

This region was the site of America's first civil war, the Whiskey rebellion of 1794. It later became the epicenter of American distilling when whiskey production boomed in the 1800's.
